Christian Aid has distanced itself from negative remarks about the pro-Israel lobby by new trustee Baroness Tonge, over which she faces the removal of the Liberal Democrat whip. However, a spokesman for the charity - which has a history of causing offence to the Jewish community - insisted on Wednesday that she would "absolutely" remain a member of its board.

Baroness Tonge was accused of verging on antisemitism when she told a Lib-Dem conference fringe meeting that "the pro-Israel lobby has got its grips on the Western world, its financial grips. I think they have probably got a certain grip on our party."

When an MP, she had been sacked from the party's front-bench for expressing empathy with suicide bombers, a sentiment she repeated at the fringe meeting.

Baroness Tonge was one of three new members appointed to the Christian Aid board of trustees in April. No public announcement was made of the position until JC inquiries this week.

Christian Aid spokesman John Davison told the JC that "Baroness Tonge was not speaking on behalf of Christian Aid, nor had she consulted with the organisation before making these comments [at conference]. The areas on which she was speaking are outside the remit of a development organisation which deals with issues of poverty and humanitarian relief."

He added that the charity had not contacted her over the remarks. He expected its director, Daleep Mukarji, to discuss them with her when they next met, although no date had been arranged. There were no plans to raise the issue at the November board meeting.

Christian Aid's reaction was condemned by communal leaders and the Council of Christians and Jews. CCJ director David Gifford told the JC that Baroness Tonge's remarks about Israel displayed a "dangerous paranoia."

Her comments had "clearly undermined the work of Christians in dialogue with the Jewish community."

Baroness Tonge did not return the JC's calls.
